Course Introduction:
Welcome to EDUC 2301-01 Foundations of the Teaching Profession. To be successful, teachers must have a solid understanding of the research that supports and defines effective teaching practices. They must also command a deep practical knowledge about students, how they learn, and about the strategies that promote student learning.
This course is intended to provide an overview of education in the United States and in the state Texas. Foundations of the Teaching Profession provides (a) a historical perspective on teaching from colonial times to the present and strives to show how expectations for teachers are characterized by both constancy and change. You will be provided with a foundation in (b) recognizing the diversity among students and understanding how students learn, (c) leadership aspects of teaching, (d) creating positive learning communities, (e) basic classroom management understandings and skills, (f) assessment and evaluation, (g) basic instructional models, and (h) certification and instructional requirements in the state of Texas. The course will be taught in the following format: online document accessibility, video presentations, research, response journal writing, and one required field observation.
